I get the feeling that automotiveLinks to an external site. writers complained that Toyota cars were plain looking and boring and Toyota fell into a trap James May of Top Gear once said on the show. That the car makers try to please the automotive press and make oLinks to an external site.ver styled and ugly cars with very harsh rides.

That Toyota tried to go in a direction the other car makersLinks to an external site. were not and ended up with vehicles in the Pontiac Links to an external site.Aztek school of styling. Where they tried too hard to be different.

I see Honda had been going in that direction as well but finally dialed it back in 2019.

As for Toyota, I see a lot of 2014 and earlier ones on the roads, where they looked fine. But of the later ones with the huge front grilles, I see relatively few. So I wonder if ugly looks has cost Toyota sales.

Myself, I have been debating hard on what will likely be my last vehicle purchase to replace an old Focus. The RAV4 and Prius V meet my needs and I would like to get some of that Toyota reliability for my retirement vehicle.

However the RAV4 has this huge ugly fake skid plate on the front and it just looks angry. I just cannot see spending money on it. The older ones, pre 2014 looked just fine.
